Motivation

During the COVID-19 global pandemic Algolysis Ltd has designed and implemented this data platform to retrieve, crowd-source, store and analyze data pertaining to the pandemic's spread. Literally dozens of global websites aggregating and visualising the pandemic's data have popped up in the first two months of the outbreak. This platform was the first one to be developed in Cyprus.

Algolysis initiated this effort on the 17th March 2020 and made a first fully functional version available by 26th March 2020. We invested a lot of effort on crowd-sourcing and sifting through the news to keep track of the data of Cyprus. Despite our best efforts, it has not been possible, as the official government announcements offered little to no data on the distribution across Cyrpus' districts, so we eventually collected the total counts. This lack of data availability was the trigger for providing full and free access to our COVID-19 Data JSON API, especially designed for consumption by the research community.

Moving forward, we expanded and automated data collection and processing, tracking the pandemic in over 200 countries, with enhanced maps, summary tables, graph statistics and an assortment of on-going research inquiries attempting to model and estimate the pandemic as it unfolds.

Shortly after this platform went public on the 26th March 2020, local government institutions launched portals, websites and applications to help fight the pandemic and inform the public. Notably:

• 26th March 2020 - Algolysis announces the launch of the first complete COVID-19 data platform in Cyprus, featuring the most granular data of the spread of the disease at the time.
• 2nd April 2020 - Excelsior CoE launched the ERATOSTHENES COVID-19 WebGIS Platform.
• 5th April 2020 - RISE UP CoE developed the first contact-tracing application COVTRACER («ΙΧΝΗΛΑΤΗΣ») in Cyprus, based on MIT's SafePaths.
• 8th April 2020 - KOIOS CoE launched publicly the data visualisation part of the platform develop for covid-19 incident collection and tracking for the governement of the Republic of Cyprus, available at: https://covid19.ucy.ac.cy/.

All data collected by the site are anonymized and will not be associated with the responder of the question.The platform cannot backtrace the data to the participants. The data collected will be made public under the Open Data Commons Attribution License.
